University of Portsmouth

University of PortsmouthA race with Purpose – The Robert and MeiLi Hefner Foundation collaborated with The University of Portsmouth in the southeast of England to help fund the University’s GB Row Challenge. Rowing teams challenge themselves to row the strenuous 2,000 miles off England’s isles battling tides and unpredicted weather. The rowing boats are equipped with specialized equipment that aims to gather samples of microplastics, environmental DNA (eDNA), monitoring water salinity and temperature, and building a map of noise pollution. The collected samples will be sent to the University for P.H. students to help with the analysis of its findings on environmental damage and the long term impact of pollutants on our seas and oceans. The research will run for four consecutive years, starting in 2022, so comparable data will be tracked each year as trends will change. The first race was set off from London on June 12, 2022.
