The Robert & MeiLi Hefner Foundation Sponsored an All-Female Crew of Rowers, Team Ithaca, of the Great Britain Row Challenge
March 20, 2024
By Metra Taleghanifard
First report on data collected by record-breaking rowers shows Great Britain’s warming seas
This is one of Robert and MeiLi Hefner's passionate interests, researching the earth's environment and global ecosystem. Over several years, Robert and MeiLi Hefner have funded this project through The University of Portsmouth in collaboration with GB Row for ocean data surveyance. Team Ithaca, an all-female crew, undertook the treacherous 2,000-mile row of Britain’s coastline to collect data of the ocean’s rising temperatures over the past few years, due to plastic pollutants. Although slight, the impact of the rising temperatures indicates a more serious concern for marine ecosystems and life. On average scientists at the university have found the United Kingdom coastal seas to be 0.39 degrees Celsius warmer in 2023 compared to 2022.
“Satellites only measure the temperature at the very surface of the oceans, therefore, it is unclear how this intense heating penetrates the ocean interior, possibly affecting deeper ecosystems. The data collected by GB Row Challenge confirms that this heating reached at least 75 cm of depth.” - Laura Fantuzzi, a University of Portsmouth PhD.

Reflections from Participants in the “Hefner Initiative – USA/China/Asia” 2019 Summer Program
August 21, 2019
By Metra Taleghanifard
This summer’s Hefner Initiative trip to China included two students from The Webb Schools in California, two students and one faculty from the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics, one student from Western Albemarle High School in Virginia, and one teacher from the Free Union Country School in Virginia. The group spent twelve days in China, visiting the cities of Beijing and Suzhou. Highlights of the trip included spending time with host families from Beijing High School No. 4, learning about the history and culture of China at the ancient landmark sites, such as the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, the Capital Museum, and the Humble Administrator’s Garden. The experience included learning calligraphy and lessons playing the bamboo gourd, an ancient Chinese musical instrument. The scholars and ambassadors reflect upon their experience.
“It is experiences like the one we just had that connect people and alter lives, and this is where change will come – from people seeing the good in each other, and knowing that our world is safer and more abundant when we work through obstacles together.”
–Blair Amberly, Free Union Country School
“After experiencing China’s culture, I have much more understanding and empathy for the wonderful people who live there. This experience has allowed me to imagine more creatively, possibilities for my own life, country, and the world.”
–Alexandra Dagli, Western Albemarle High School
“The experience and the interactions I had with the local people transformed my perceptions of Chinese culture. I learned that China is a complex and diverse nation, one that is rich in the preservation of heritage sites, yet, one that is also at the forefront of the global capital market. From conquering the Great Wall to living alongside a host family, the authentic ways I engaged with both the land and the people, forever shaped how I’ll continue to interact with the world.”
–Sydney Wuu, The Webb Schools
“The Hefner Initiative opened my eyes to an entirely new perspective on society, technology, politics, science, and the issues facing our world. It led me to understand how closely intertwined the destinies of the United States and China are, though we still have plenty to learn from one another.”
–Luke Raus, The Webb Schools
“I experienced how China and the US trade culture and economic goods. I was also able to learn how Chinese citizens were able to use their history to grow a stronger future for their country. Simultaneously, I saw how western culture played a key role in shaping this future. By incorporating each other’s cultures into everyday life, China and the US build a bridge combining the two countries to create a more healthy and strong relationship.”
–Srija Nuguri, Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics
“This program has allowed me to form relationships and memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. Experiencing China gave me a new perspective on US/China relations, and it highlighted the pressing importance of maintaining a positive relationship between the two countries. I want to thank the Hefner Foundation for providing me with such an awe-inspiring opportunity!”
–David Seo, Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics
“China is a kaleidoscope of color, shapes, people, and action. When you have experienced China, you have experienced life.”
–Dr. Janet Neufeld, Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics

Two students from the Webb Schools of California and two students and one counselor from the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics participated in this year’s Hefner Initiative trip to China. The group spent twelve days in Beijing and Suzhou. Highlights of the trip included spending time with host families from Beijing High School No. 4, learning about the history and culture of China at the sites such as the Great Wall of China, the Ming Tombs, the Forbidden City, the Capital Museum, and the Humble Administrator’s Garden, and gaining a better understanding of U.S.-China relations from Dr. Tong Zhao at the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center.
“I believe it is imperative that the United States and China work to strengthen communication and build stronger trust between themselves to keep their relationship positive and cooperative.” -Juliana Base, Hefner Scholar-Webb
“One of the major tourist sites is the Great Wall of China and it was my favorite part of my trip. Although it was a strenuous climb to get to the top when I arrived at the top it was worth it! The views at the top were stunning and again I met people from all over the world. People were friendly, and we interacted with each other….I still think it is a fascinating country and am hoping that at some point I will return to China and experience more of its rich culture and the hospitality of the people.”
-Jaden Dumont, Hefner Scholar- Webb
“Essential to mitigating further conflict, Dr. Zhao and many other experts on global policy
emphasize the importance to both the United States and China of developing real, in-depth
understanding of each other.
-Cynthia Parish, Hefner Ambassador- OSSM
“I still find that sending the students to the other country to learn is a powerful experience. My two-week visit to the other country taught me so much that I could not have learned in school. So, them coming for college or us going for college can make a huge impact on how we understand each other. We can learn so much about their culture and vice versa.”
-Attaira Prince, Hefner Scholar- OSSM
“Through exchanges such as these, I believe that both Americans and Chinese people can understand how as two extremely powerful nations we need not pose threats to one another. Even if our current leaders might see each other as enemies. it is my hope that our educated and informed leaders of tomorrow can help shift the direction of our relationship to one of partnership.”
-Alejandro Lozano-De Aos, Hefner Scholar-OSSM

Five students from Beijing High School No. 4 spent three weeks studying at the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics as part of the 2018 “Hefner Initiative USA/ China/ Asia.” This year’s Hefner Scholars were Cloris Zhang, Cynthia Li, Julia Wen, Leo Xu, and Steven Chen. They stayed in the dorms at OSSM, attended classes and participated in school activities, as well as enjoying special outings to learn about the history and culture of Oklahoma.
This year’s program included tours of the Oklahoma History Center, Norman North High School, Oklahoma City Community College’s Film & Video Department, the University of Oklahoma campus, the Sam Noble Museum, and the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The Hefner Scholars also enjoyed a performance of the musical “School of Rock,” hosted by OSSM Principal Dr. Frank Wang. Hefner Scholar Leo Xu wrote of his experiences, "Prior to this trip, I had only blurry ideas about this relationship [between the U.S. and China] due to my lack of understanding about American culture. It’s not that I knew too little about the U.S, since I have taken American history courses and been to America before. But none of them provided me with an opportunity to truly experience American culture. That’s why this trip funded by Hefner Foundation was such a significant step in understanding America for me. Going to a real American high school, attending American classes and chatting with American teenagers are among the best ways to understand this culture.”

For this year's Hefner Initiative, four American high school students and two adult chaperones traveled to Beijing and Suzhou. The students stayed with families from Beijing High School No. 4, learning about Chinese family life. While in Beijing, the group visited many historic sites including the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, the Great Wall of China, and the Capital Museum. The group then took a bullet train to Suzhou, where they took a cruise on the ancient city canals and visited the Humble Administrator’s Garden, the Suzhou Museum, the Opera Museum, and learned about traditional silk spinning and embroidery.
“I had believed China to be very uniform, and that the government requires conformity to their own principles, but this was hardly the case … China today is far more diverse and multi-faceted than I would have believed from reading about it.”
-Anthony Villalobos, Hefner Scholar-Webb
“China’s senior citizens impressed me greatly and made me realize that regardless of the current political relationship of the two nations, the people of the two nations can always be enthusiastic towards each other and willing to turn a complete stranger into a friend.”
-Georgia Newman, Hefner Scholar-Webb
“As an American that went to China I plan on encouraging more people of different races to visit China because the country is beautiful and rich in an interesting history. I also hope to revisit the country again one day.”
-Chinwe Okere, Hefner Scholar-OSSM
“We had amazing home cooked meals while they told me about the actual life in China, not the general idea people tell tourists to satisfy them … I could not have asked for a better host family, and I am so very grateful that I was lucky enough to have been paired with Icey. Living with Icey showed me how welcoming Chinese families could be.”
-Shania Do, Hefner Scholar- OSSM
“After my Hefner Ambassador experience, as I reflect, I realize that I had a number of ideas of what I would find that were, to say the least, inaccurate. In my mind, this kind of realization is what is imperative to truly make the most change in the relations between the U.S. people and the Chinese people.”
-Sara Marie Bodenstein, Hefner Ambassador-OSSM
“I believe now more than ever that the next generation of Chinese and American leaders must find ways to recognize difference, appreciate each other’s rich cultures, beliefs and interests. To achieve this, it will be important to connect young leaders from both countries with established leaders on both sides to take on the responsibility of safeguarding peace and enhancing mutual growth in the future.”

Five American students and two teachers participated in this year’s program, spending twelve days in Beijing and Suzhou. The students were hosted by Beijing High School No. 4, and visited the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Great Wall of China, and the National Museum of China, among many other sites. The group then took a bullet train to Suzhou, where they visited the Humble Administrator’s Garden, the Suzhou Museum, and learned traditional Chinese calligraphy.
“Perhaps one of the most unforgettable portions of the trip was meeting Phyllis and her parents, my host family. Several days into our stay in Beijing, I remember calling home and telling my parents that Phyllis was the most like myself of anyone that I have ever met. Who would have thought that such a well-matched friend existed half way across the world?”
-Eileen Egolf, Hefner Scholar- Creede
“Staying with my host family showed me that although there are big differences between U.S. and Chinese culture, we aren’t all that different. That these people went out of their way to accommodate me, for nothing in return, has really stuck with me. Their kindness, generosity, and hospitality was the highlight of my trip.”
-Kaitlin Hawkes, Hefner Scholar- Webb
“This trip gave me a genuine understanding of a culture I assumed I knew everything about. Every day led to new discoveries; expectations were met or corrected, insight about our respective cultures was shared between me and the local students, the beauty of the Chinese monuments inspired awe, reminding me the limits of what pictures can convey.”
-Raphael Huang, Hefner Scholar- Webb
“I kept arriving at one simple realization: China deems its cultural heritage as an asset, something to be inherently proud of, and something to not be shed. While America innovates as a startling pace, shifting from cultural importance to unthinkable technology. Regardless of these different ideologies, their partnership is essential to the world on not only an economic level, but something of a cultural one as well. A great of number of things can be learned from China.”
-Ritvik Ganguly, Hefner Scholar- OSSM
“I gained newfound wisdom on China’s connection to the west and finally verified my beliefs about modern Chinese culture myself. On top of that, I had seen some of the greatest sites to ever be created by man himself, made new friends, and got to live adventurously for over ten days.”
-Zach Arani, Hefner Scholar- OSSM
“A real connection with another culture begins from visiting, engaging, looking closely and open mindedly at their way of life. I am so fortunate and grateful to have had the experience to spend time interacting with some of the people and history of China. It has changed the way I will always think of China. It is one of my favorite places I have visited, a place I want to learn much more about, and one that I want to revisit throughout my life. It has also changed the way I will discuss and promote China in the U.S.—as a place of incredible history, hardworking and peaceful people, and forward-thinking in our modern world.”
-Blair Amberly, Hefner Ambassador- Free Union Country School
“Through the Hefner Initiatives, the students realize how big the world truly is. They gain a greater understanding of other cultures, and witness new perspectives outside the United States. Seeing the emotional and intellectual development of our students is one of the great joys in participating in this program. They take plenty home with them, but – whether they realize it or not – also leave something with their new friends in Beijing. “

The 2015 "Hefner Initiative - China" program this past July was a great success with two weeks of cultural experience in Beijing and Suzhou China. Beijing never fails to awe-inspire tourists from around the world, and this year was the program's first experience in the Venice of the Orient - Suzhou!
"The trip to China was a truly remarkable experience! I am extremely grateful I was given such a wonderful opportunity. Only a week into the fall semester, and I've already been able to share some of my new insight and experience with my students."
-Monique Baxter, Hefner Ambassador-OSSM
"The time I was able to spend with our host students allowed me to better understand the Chinese culture and how their views are different from my own, and I now understand and can see that a good relationship between China and the United States is imperative. My trip to China was an unforgettable experience!"
-Sophia Mastakas, Hefner Awardee-Albemarle
"We were shown the wonders and history of Beijing by our fantastic host buddies! The Sino-US relationship is changing and our two nations are the two most powerful countries in the world, and having a mutually beneficial relationship is vital."
-Cori McGinley, Hefner Awardee-Webb Schools
"All of the secondhand sources about the world pale in comparison with firsthand experience. The life in the cities we visited in China were completely opposite to my quiet suburban life in The States, and this experience was far beyond anything I'd ever seen or even heard about in the US."
-Francisco Munoz, Hefner Awardee-Webb Schools
"This is truly a once in a lifetime experience; even if I had the privilege to make this journey at some other point in my life, I would never have made the friends that I did, learned what I learned, nor had the opportunity to understand just how magnificent a country China is!"
-Pedro De Aos, Hefner Awardee-OSSM
"China, in a word, was incredible. Its seamless integration of modern and ancient was a sight to behold, as were the throngs of people we perennially waded through. Everything was larger than life, and the kindness felt by everyone and our hosts was amazing!"

By Metra Nichols
The Robert & MeiLi Hefner Foundation, in partnership with the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics, has established a new initiative program in effort to expand upon and further promote one of its guiding principles: to build long-term, positive relationships between the USA and China. The “Hefner Initiative – Beijing High School No. 4” Award, sponsors students from the Beijing High School No. 4 in Beijing, China, to travel to and attend classes, as well as participate in extracurricular activities, at the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
The opportunity this year was awarded to those students of Beijing High School No. 4 who have hosted the Foundation’s Hefner Awardees from America the previous summer in Beijing, as sponsored under our Hefner Initiative summer programs. This year the Beijing High School students enjoyed a variety of activities during the approximate three-week program this past month. The students from Beijing engaged in the American classroom experience as well as toured a traditional American high school at Norman High in Norman, Oklahoma. The four students also learned about the history and the heritage of the state by visiting the Oklahoma Heritage Museum and the Oklahoma History Center. One of the many highlights from the program, was the students’ opportunity to sit-in on some exciting film editing classes at the Oklahoma City Community College where they met one of OCCC’s professors of Film Studies and Academy Award Winning Producer, Gray Frederickson. In addition, the students reunited with their American friends from OSSM, whom they hosted last summer in Beijing, China. This program attributes to the Robert & MeiLi Hefner Foundation’s mission to foster and build relationships of cultural understanding between the United States and China.

The Hefner Initiative 2014 program this past July was an extraordinary success with two weeks of cultural experience in Singapore and in Beijing, China. Learning about the many different cultures of Singapore and astonished by the ancient history deeply rooted in Beijing, this year's program was a great one. The 2014 Hefner Initiative Hefner Awardees from the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics in Oklahoma City and from The Webb Schools in Claremont, California share their experience.
"There was an immediate, fulfilling experience that I felt on this trip. It was both meditative and rich with culture, food, and the people. The societies really opened up my eyes to so many possibilities in the building of relationships with others. I would love to express in the future to others how gratifying it is to embed in a place that was previously foreign to me."
-Samantha Okere, Hefner Awardee-OSSM
"Traveling to Singapore and China was an amazing cultural experience that has helped shape my view of the world in many ways. Being immersed in the daily lives of people in two countries as different from each other as they are from eachother has had a serious impact on my life. I realized how much more I have to learn about the world. The Hefner Initiative has inspired me to travel the more and made a very positive influence on my life."
-Katie McDonald, Hefner Awardee-OSSM
"The cultural knowledge I had experienced during my journey was greatly impactful. I appreciated the accomplishments and unique traits of each city and felt I gained valuable insight into the lives of others. More than anything else, I'll take away that there are ways of life so distinct from my own and learning about them is truly intellectually satisfying. I am so grateful to the Robert and MeiLi Hefner Foundation for affording me the opportunity to discover this about myself."
-Anthony Palacio, Hefner Awardee-Webb Schools
"What a fascinating experience, and I know I will never forget it. It was an amazing opportunity and changed the way I think about the world especially foreign relations. I learned how important someone's culture is when trying to understand him or her. I really grew as a human being in that I better understand the importance of culture. I really enjoyed getting to know the host famiies and their ways of life!"
-Maddie Gaumer, Hefner Awardee-Webb Schools
"Singapore is a very pleasant place to explore with all main attractions close together, while Beijing was much more populous and spread out with lots of bicycles and motorbikes. This was an appreciated in-depth look at two of the most important Asian cities in the world. I thank the Robert and MeiLi Hefner Foundation for providing me with this wonderful travel experience."
-Kurt Bachmann, Physics Teacher and Hefner Awardee-OSSM

Life-Changing Trip to China Adds to Vast Cultural Knowledge
By 2012 Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics Hefner Awardees, Alyssa Rudelis and Phil Burnett
Winter 2012, OSSM Parents Weekly
In July, we took part in a trip to China and Singapore. The two-week adventure, sponsored by the Robert and MeiLi Hefner Foundation, focused on cultural immersion. From living with foreign families to attending their schools, we can attest to our new-found cultural knowledge. This eye-opening journey began before dawn on one of many flights to our first destination.
We arrived in Singapore in the midst of pouring rain after more than 30 hours of flight. There were five in our group. We stayed in the dorms of the National University of Singapore High School of Math and Science. In terms of curriculum, residence life and general aspirations of the student body, we remarked on the similarities between OSSM and the Singaporean high school. While on the island, we as Hefner Awardees attended daily classes in chemistry, English, physics, biology and statistics. Outside of school, we explored the city's sites, international cuisine and public transportation system.
After spending a few days at the school and becoming acquainted with our Singaporean classmates, we boarded a plane for Shanghai. The expected three-hour layover after arriving in Shanghai soon became only a hope. Due to historical flooding in Beijing, we and our guide were stranded in Shanghai for the entire night. The next afternoon, we arrived in the capital of the People's Republic of China where we met our host families.
